Christmas Defined

The Britannica definition of Christmas describes it as a Christian festival that celebrates the birth of Jesus. Over time, the meaning of Christmas has evolved. It is no longer solely about honoring Jesus' birth; it has transformed into a time for family gatherings, giving thanks, and exchanging gifts. For the MLGU, particularly the current Mayor, it is also a season to spread joy and hope, especially to those who are struggling.

The Christmas Village

Every Christmas season, decorating the Government Center of the MLGU has become a cherished tradition, thanks to the initiative of Mayor Lorife "Aping" Magadan Otaza. This tradition began during the pandemic, with the first theme being "White Christmas." Mayor Aping was sensitive to the struggles faced by the people of Loreto due to the pandemic's effects. With this in mind, she envisioned a Christmas Village to bring hope and joy to the community.

The efforts of the Mayor, her partner, and the local government unit (LGU) teams paid off as they successfully provided hope to both residents and visitors. This marked the beginning of "Shine Loreto" and the creation of a new festival in town called the "Kaawang Festival." "Kaawang" is a Manobo word that means "shiny."

Christmas has evolved into a festival of hope. It has transformed into a non-religious celebration, impacting not only Catholics but everyone. The Christmas decorations uplift the spirits of all who see them. For individuals of other faiths, the Christmas holiday has become a time for family bonding and giving thanks.

Emotional and Economic Boost

Loreto became a place of horror when rebels attacked the municipality, resulting in the brutal killing of two police officers. This incident occurred during the Christmas season of 2005.

In 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, disrupting lives, hopes, and progress. As restrictions eased, the current MLGU Mayor planned a surprise for the people to uplift their hopes for a brighter future.

Their efforts were not in vain; the people of Loreto became enthusiastic about creating a brighter Loreto. Studies show that the Christmas celebration positively impacts the economy. With the introduction of the Christmas Village, we hope that many visitors will come to rediscover the area's beauty. It’s important to appreciate the gifts of nature rather than focusing on its challenging history. Thanks to the support of the MLGU, along with the provincial and national governments, non-governmental organizations, and those who visit Loreto for business or leisure, the community is thriving. 

We are hopeful that support for sustainable progress will continue.
